H Hello and welcome to our first ever Magness Farms Blog. Thank you for signing up and supporting us as your local farm. As this is our first addition, I thought we would explain a little more about what we do here at Magness Farms, who we are and what we’ve been up to!
Magness Farms is run by myself Catrina and my partner George Magness, we aim to provide local, high welfare produce to the surrounding communities of Thaxted and Saffron Walden from our farm based in Thaxted, Essex. We currently supply pork and beef fresh from the farm and we supply free range turkeys during the Christmas period.
Currently we have a small herd of Belted Galloway cattle and a small drift of Landrance x Saddleback pigs.
This month we welcomed our first ever lot of piglets, born here on the farm from our three wonderful first time sows, who we have had here with us on the farm since they were 8 weeks old.
You will often catch our sows on our social media page ‘Magness Farms’ or ‘Catrinaandthepigs’ – they are quite little characters and are named Nanny Mcphee, Piggles and Squiggles. Nanny has 11 piglets, Piggles has 4 and Squiggles has 7 so altogether we have a whopping 22 piglets running about the farm causing mischief.
In the summer months May-October we like to take our pigs up to the 19 acre wood we have on the farm and let them roam freely in a large penned area. This gives them full access to roam, dig and forage until their hearts content. We will be taking them up to the wood at the end of May, so again if you’d like to see pics please take a look at our social media pages.
This month as the weather dried up we were also able to take our Belted Galloways out to grass. They will stay out now until the winter, when they will return to our spacious barn to give the grass a well-needed rest.
We offered our bbq boxes and pork and apple burgers out this month also, and to our surprise sold out within 24 hours – so thank you to those of you who ordered! We love to see your food creations so please carry on sending them through, your burger masterpieces and hotdog sensations are always welcomed!

Free Range Tamworth Pork Boxes – These will be available to purchase through our website towards the beginning of June and will be advertised through our website and social media pages.
Our Tamworth’s originally came from the Saffron Walden County High School Farm and have been reared outside. They are reared on fruit and vegetables and a nutritional mix. Tamworth’s are one of the hardiest breeds of pig and therefore can live outside all-year round, they are slowly produced and matured to give the meat a succulent texture that’s packed with flavour!
As we only have small herds here at Magness Farms to ensure the quality of our animal’s health and well-being is at the highest quality we can only provide a limited supply of meat at one time. Therefore, if you would like to get your hands on some of our produce it is important you do so as soon as possible.
We like to reward our loyal customers by offering those subscribed to our monthly blog a 24-hour early bird access to our produce. Therefore, we will send an email out to all those on our blog list 24 hours before we release our products to the general public on our website to ensure you have first dibs!
